Submaterial is a design and manufacturing studio based in ABQ, NM. We have always focused on natural and sustainable materials which are fashioned by hand into wallcoverings, panels, screens, and more by our skilled fabricators using environmentally conscious and lean manufacturing processes.

  • Wool felt and cork, both absorb sound, providing acoustic dampening to rooms in homes, offices, or hospitality spaces
  • The sound dampening of our wall panels can be boosted by fabricating the piece with an acoustic board substrate
  • Submaterial products marry form and function with sound dampening that is also aesthetically attractive

    • Handmade

  • We deliberately create by hand, preserving time-honored techniques and valuing the expertise of the craftsperson
  • We don’t eschew machinery entirely, but we use them when doing so supports and relieves the body of the makers
