Minimalists beware: Your reign of austerity has been deposed. Manufacturers are spooling back to recapture the opulence and ornamentation of the Victorian era, an eclectic epoch that seamlessly channeled earlier European and Middle Eastern sensibilities into a template for 19th-century excess. Proving the staying power of the period, the material palette is practically all-inclusive: textiles, flooring, moldings, wallcoverings, surfacing. Classical damasks and paisleys intermingle with formal florals and hints of toile, but less baronial patterns (think checks, stripes and basketweaves) keep the statement just this side of precious.
